Summer on the Mountain

Welcome to summer on the mountain! Temperatures are normally about 10 degrees cooler on Chewelah Peak during the hot summer months, so come on up and get out of the heat!

Please use caution if you are out on the mountain Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm as crews are around the mountain with heavy machinery.

Spring Skiing

For those who want to continue chasing spring turns after we close, the mountain is open to the public. Excellent conditions can exist all the way into June, and sometimes July. Lifts will not be operating and the mountain will not be patrolled, so make sure to carry necessary supplies, be prepared for all situations and inform someone before you go. Please be aware that snowmobilers are also allowed on the mountain after the season ends as well as 49 machinery.

Summer Routes

Mountain Biking

Lifts do not operate during the summer season. There are several service roads in the West, Central, and East Basins that are perfect for mountain biking.

There are no set non-motorized trails, but the land is open to the public. You can also stop by the Ticket Office at the main lodge during business hours for more information.

Huckleberry Picking

Chewelah Peak is a well-known spot for huckleberry picking.  Berries are typically in season from mid July to early August, depending on the weather. Berry size can differ depending on time of season, type of berry and location.

Under Forest Service rules and regulations, you are allowed to pick up to 3 gallons of huckleberries per day. Picking berries for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.

Hiking

The mountain is open for hiking during the summer months unless otherwise posted. Depnding on the winter season, the snowpack is usually gone by the 4th of July. Snow can linger in some shaded areas.

Both the Nordic trail system and service roads are available for hiking, as well as the runs themselves. You can take an easy way to the summit, like Portal to Silver Ridge, or just head straight up.

See the trail map below for suggested hiking routes.

Parking

If you do come up, please park in our Main Lot, North Lot, or Nordic Lot.  For those travelling to the East Basin or another outlying area on the mountain, please do not block any gates.  Visitors are asked to observe all posted signs as there may be construction or resort improvement projects underway.

Garbage

Chewelah Peak is a beautiful, pristine place, and we would like to keep it that way.  Please pack out all garbage and help us preserve this important recreational resource.

Please Note

When spending the day in the mountains, its always a good idea to bring the ten essentials.
Smoking is prohibited in the Colville National Forest during the summer.
